Activities in Marugame (1)
As a seminar activity, we asked Yumekaze (夢風), who are active in Marugame-shi, Kagawa Prefecture, to experience making uchiwa as in last year.
Marugame-shi is located in the centre-west part of Kagawa, the second largest city in Kagawa after Takamatsu. The population is approximately 109,000. There are two famous things for Marugame. The first one is Marugame Castle, which is visible from the JR Yosan Line. Marugame Castle is the smallest castle tower in Japan, but the stone wall is well-shaped and looks awesome. Unfortunately, it collapsed due to the Typhoon Trami (Typhoon #24) in September 2018. Then efforts for restoration have made. Marugame Castle was the residence of the Kyogoku family, which governed in the Edo period. They possessed the Nikkari Aoe, one of the best Japanese swords, as their heirloom. In an online game called Toucan Ranbu, a personified character from "Nikkari Aoe" is appeared. Some fans love Nikkari Aoe then Marugame Castle is drawn more attention. In fact, Nikkari Aoe is kept at Marugame City Museum.
The second one is Uchiwa, a tradioional Japanese fan, which is made from bamboo and Japanese hand-made paper, washi. Marugame Uchiwa, well-established brand in Japan, accounts for about 90% of the total uchiwa production in Japan. In the Edo period, the Marugame Clan encouraged their samurai to produce uchiwa for the second income source. After the Meiji period, the large scale production was made in Marugame. There is an uchiwa museum in Marugame.
Uchiwa was originally made of bamboo, the skeleton called bones, but now more than 90% of bones are plastic. Plastic uchiwa are often distributed as consumables throughout the sales promotion in Japan. Unfortunately, uchiwa are quickly turned into garbage. In addition, we do not use uchiwa in winter. Consequently, bamboo Uchiwa is produced in small quantities. In addition, an issue of craftsmen's aging is rather serious. The number of craftsmen is decreasing year by year. Marugame city and uchiwa craftsmen's cooperative organise experiencing classes of uchiwa-making, and a uchiwa-technique course at the museum. Yumekaze is set up by a group of five people, who have studied in the course, and currently takes in various activities.
ゼミの活動として、香川県丸亀市で活動を行っている夢風さんにお願いをして、昨年に引き続きうちわ作り体験を行なってきした。
香川県丸亀市は香川県中西部に位置し、人口が約10万９千人で高松に次ぐ香川県では第２の都市です。丸亀といえば、予讃線からも見える丸亀城、そしてうちわが有名です。
丸亀城は日本で規模が最も小さい天守ですが、すごく立派な石垣が市内のあっちこっちから見ることができます。残念なことに2018年9月の台風で崩落し、修復に向けた取り組みが始まっています。また、丸亀城といえば、オンラインゲームの刀剣乱舞の中に登場するニッカリ青江が注目を浴びているそうです。ニッカリ青江が丸亀市立資料館に所蔵されています。
丸亀のうちわは、全国のうちわの生産高の約90％を占める生産地になっています。丸亀うちわとして江戸時代の丸亀藩の武士の内職として作られていたそうです。明治以降は、大規模にうちわ生産して、うちわといえば丸亀になったそうです。丸亀市にはうちわの港ミュージアムがあります。
うちわは骨と呼ばれる骨格はもともと竹製でしたが、現在はプラスティック製のうちわが90％以上になります。プラスティック製のものは消耗品として販促などため街中で配布されていることが多いです。これもあり残念ながら、うちわがすぐにゴミとなってしまいます。また冬はうちわを使う機会はほとんどありません。
竹製のうちわは、生産される量も少なく、また高齢化などと重なり、取り扱う職人も年々少なくなってきているのが現状です。うちわのことについて理解を深めてもらうため、前述のうちわミュージアムでは体験教室を開催したり、技術技法講座を開設しています。夢風さんは、この技術技法講座で学んだ5名がグループを作って様々な活動を行っています。
